After winning the top goalscorer award for the 2019-20 PSL season, Gabadinho Mhango has revealed that he used his doubters as inspiration for his success.
The Malawian joined the Sea Robbers from Bidvest Wits at the start of last season, and while a number of supporters were excited by his arrival there were those who doubted his ability to put the ball in the back of the net regularly.
After a slow start, Mhango began to fire as the season progressed, smashing in an impressive 16 goals to claim the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award alongside Highlands Parks striker Peter Shalulile.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Mhango admitted that he always believed in himself and never let the negative comments affect him.
“When I joined the club, I read some comments on social media about me,” said Mhango. “Some people were saying, why sign Mhango, we need a goalscorer not Mhango, and stuff like that. Obviously as players we try as much as possible to avoid reading negative comments but sometimes it’s impossible to ignore them. But, I believe in myself and that is why I never allowed the negative voices to get into my head,” he said.
The 27-year-old also shared that he arrived at the Soweto giants with a specific goal in mind and is more than pleased that he managed to surpass it in his first season with the club.
“Before the season started my target was to score 15 goals. I always believed that I have the ability to score goals and I did just that, but credit must also go to my teammates. I am not alone out there on the field; I have quality players around me who made this all possible,” Mhango added.
