Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp believes his side are well equipped to challenge for silverware during the 2019-20 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
The Glamour Boys’ search for silverware continued after falling to a 2-0 defeat by Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the eighth edition of the Carling Black Label Cup at the FNB Stadium last weekend.
Amakhosi have already added a few new faces to their squad after capturing the services of Samir Nurkovic, James Koeti, Lazarous Kambole, Kearyn Baccus and Yagan Sasman.
Middendorp says he is delighted with how their preparations went for the new season, but feels that there is a lot more work ahead for Amakhosi with two days left until the new campaign begins.
‘We have done our homework,’ Middendorp told his club’s website. ‘We have brought in new blood in the team. I am happy with the preparation and think we are better prepared to challenge for the honours this season.
‘We have done a lot of work, on and off the pitch.
‘We have to recognise that for the past few months we had a problem with injuries. That impacted negatively our intentions. This time we have it all worked out. I anticipate good performances this season.’
The Amakhosi mentor admits that Highlands Park will not be a walk in the park, and expects a tough showing from their first opponents when their 2019-20 Absa Premiership season begins on Sunday.
‘We worked with the individual players in the past two months to get everyone up to speed,’ he added.
‘We respect Highlands Park because they are a good side, but we collected four points from them last season. They do lots of things right and so it will be a tough game on Sunday.’
The match at the Makhulong Stadium kicks off at 3pm.
