Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp admits he is not looking too far ahead, despite his side topping the Absa Premiership heading into the end of the first quarter of the league season.
Amakhosi have won six, drawn one and lost one of their opening eight league games this season. This placed them four points clear at the top of the table, although they have played two more games than the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits.
Chiefs are in prime position to finish top of the league at the end of the PSL’s quarterly innovation, where the winning team pockets R1.5 million.
Despite this, Middendorp says he is not looking too far ahead.
‘I don’t know how many games is Q1 – the P or Q2‚ Q6‚ Q7 or whatever. I’m good in mathematics but I’m not good in this counting [to know] in the end what’s necessary or whatever,’ said Middendorp.
‘We just try to figure out what we need and‚ as I said‚ we still have a lot of work to do to get really around to go into 90 minutes to dominate more‚ to put more opportunities to score with the right movements‚’ he added.
‘I only repeat again and again that guys like Lebogang [Manyama] and Eric [Mathoho], they are all fresh. They didn’t play for five to six months last year. They are new players coming together with the other guys.’
‘It’s not my right, but I know inside the club there are probably those who know what is Q1 and how important it is‚’ continued the German coach.
‘Of course, it increases the budget a little bit‚ but I don’t know exactly how much … but I’m not interested in starting to count points.’
Chiefs will now head into the Fifa break in a good position. The time off will help them prepare for their next away league fixture against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns on 27 October, which will be a real test of their title credentials.
