Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has implored Amakhosi fans to show respect for Daniel Akpeyi and stop chanting for Itumeleng Khune as he will get his chance.

Chiefs came from behind to beat Cape Town City 2-1 at Newlands on Tuesday evening to remain unbeaten in the Absa Premiership.

The Soweto giants went behind early on in the encounter which prompted supporters to chant the name of Khune, who has been out injured since December but is nearing return.

Speaking post-game, Middendorp admitted to SuperSport TV that he was irritated by the chants because it was unfair to Akpeyi.

‘I’m a little bit irritated about some things coming out from the group. I’m really asking that people are fair. It can’t be that after five minutes, we are asking “Khune, Khune, Khune”.

‘Khune will get his time after the bench and I think people need to show a bit more respect.’

When asked if someone asked him about the Bafana Bafana No 1, Middendorp responded:

‘No, there was a loud shouting from the fans after five minutes, thats what I mean. We should not be too irritated. But you know in German we say, “Stoppen Sie den Anfang.” Stop the beginning. But that is what I wanted to say. But besides that, it was huge, fantastic support,’ he concluded.

Chiefs will now enter the international break at the top of the Absa Premiership after three wins and a draw in their opening four games.
