Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp admits he is still undecided on whether Itumeleng Khune or Daniel Akpeyi will be Amakhosi’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Khune made his long-awaited return to action when Amakhosi edged Royal Eagles 1-0 at the FNB Stadium in the Nedbank Cup last 32 after spending four months on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.
However, Akpeyi has been the preferred choice between the sticks for Chiefs this season and has already racked up 18 appearances across all competitions with eight clean sheets in the process.
Meanwhile, Khune has only managed three appearances in all competitions and was an unused substitution extra time, having last featured for Amakhosi against Baroka in October last year but was forced off the field in the first half after being injured.
‘I hope that Bruce Bvuma can also be thrown into the picture, he has different qualities and let’s add him too – basically, we have three national team goalkeepers in the room. Itu [Itumeleng Khune] will come back into the Bafana Bafana set-up because that is definitely his goal,’ Middendorp told reporters.
‘At the moment it is best not to think about it, the game was successful today [against Eagles] and we rest and train in the week and prepare ourselves for upcoming games. We will chat with the goalkeeping department because they have a clear understanding of what is possible. Let’s wait and see. I don’t want to make a decision now.’
The German mentor then confirmed that Akpeyi will continue as Amakhosi’s No 1 when they take on Maritzburg United in their next Absa Premiership fixture over the weekend.
‘Daniel played in the last league game and has had a solid run of games, he is very qualified and has kept us in the game. In the moment I would say Daniel will play next week. I don’t have a problem making the selection with Itu or without Daniel. We don’t talk too much about it, we just make the decision and that’s it,’ he confirmed.
