Cape Town City captain Thamsanqa Mkhize has apologised to Mamelodi Sundowns forward Keletso Makgalwa after his career-threatening tackle last week.

The 22-year-old winger was stretchered off the field during their 1-1 draw with Sundowns in the Absa Premiership encounter at the Lucas Moripe Stadium last Tuesday.

The Limpopo-born Makgalwa was on the pitch for just 13 minutes as a second-half substitute before City captain Thamsanqa Mkhize landed on the youngster’s ankle.

The South Africa U23 international is now expected to be sidelined for three to six months with an ankle injury, according to Sundowns.

However, Mkhize insisted that he did not intentionally injure Makgalwa as he was trying to prevent the forward from creating a goal-scoring opportunity.

‘This is not sitting well with me. I’ll get hold of him to apologise,’ Mkhize told the Daily Sun.

‘There’s no player who goes to the pitch with an intention to injure another player.

‘I was trying to stop the danger for our team but, unfortunately, I injured the young man.’

Makgalwa is likely to miss South Africa’s upcoming 2019 Caf U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after he was included in the squad.
