Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi was happy to see striker Peter Shalulile break his goal drought and get his name on the scoresheet during their victory over TS Galaxy on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians extended their lead at the top of the DStv Premiership standings to 18 points after claiming a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Rockets at the Mbombela Stadium.

Goals from Khuliso Mudau, Haashim Domingo and Shalulile helped Sundowns walk away with maximum points while also surpassing the 50-point mark after 22 matches played so far this season.

The win leaves Sundowns with a commanding lead at the summit of the league table on 51 points, while the Rockets dropped down to 15th place – level on 17 points with 14th-placed Chippa United, who are above them with a superior goal difference.

“I think we played very well. First half we lost too many balls, unfortunately,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV after the game.

“The red card also assisted us. We were playing against a very good team but I was very unhappy with the amount of pressure and intensity we put on their centre backs even when they were one man down.

“First half, in particular, because they gained a lot of confidence in that space and we lost far too many balls. We could have easily been caught on the counter-attack.

“But second half we improved the structure. Haashim [Domingo] and Kapinga had very good moments. Very happy for Divine Lunga to have such a nice assist and also very happy for Peter to score his goal because this was very important for him to keep going and gain his confidence because his confidence was getting low.

“An impressive performance second half but still not happy we only scored three goals. If we were more incisive in our passing game we could have scored more goals, but we were playing against a very good team so we must give credit to them.

“I think it was a good performance from our group and unfortunate for them to get a red card.”
