SuperSport United ended their eight-match winless streak after they claimed a 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

SuperSport came out with more intent in the opening exchanges of the match and should’ve broken the deadlock in the first minute when Thabo Mnyamane directed his cross towards Thuso Phala, but the striker was unable to guide his effort towards goal.

The visitors continued to dominate possession in the opening 30 minutes of the clash, but the Team of Choice slowly started to find their rhythm as the match went on.

Maritzburg had an opportunity to take the lead after Evans Rusike played Delin Mekoa through on goal, but the midfielder failed to trouble Reyaad Pieterse after steering his effort over the target.

Aubrey Modiba should’ve handed SuperSport the lead on the stroke of half time after he received a through ball from Phala, but the midfielder steered his effort wide of the target.

Eric Tinkler’s side were dealt a major blow 10 minutes into the second half when Thabo Mnyamane was forced off the field through injury and was subsequently replaced by Sipho Mbule.

The Team of Choice grew in confidence after 60 minutes and started seeing more of the ball, but were struggling to break down the SuperSport defence.

Modiba should’ve gifted his side the lead in the 72nd minute after beating his marker to get his shot away, but the midfielder directed his effort straight into the hands of the SuperSport shot-stopper.

Matsatsantsa eventually took the lead six minutes later when Kingston Nkhatha latched on to a cross from Phala before flicking the ball towards Modiba, who calmly slotted the ball into the net from close range to make it 1-0.

SuperSport held on to their one-goal lead over Maritzburg until the final whistle to claim all three points at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
