Rhulani Mokwena has opened up about his move to Chippa United from Orlando Pirates after being appointed as the Chilli Boys’ new head coach.
The 35-year-old coach joined the Chilli Boys on a four-month loan deal to be at the Port Elizabeth-based outfit for the remainder of the season.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that Norman Mapeza stepped down from his role as head coach following the team’s poor form this season, which keeps them at the foot of the Absa Premiership standings.
Chippa have since moved swiftly to find his replacement after capturing the services of former Pirates assistant/head coach.
Mokwena now has seven games remaining in the season to turn the Chilli Boys’ fortunes around as they look to avoid relegation.
‘Firstly, I would like to thank the chairman of Orlando Pirates for giving me the opportunity to coach his club, also to thank the players and the technical team for all their hard work and the supporters for always believing in me,’ said Mokwena in a statement released by his agency.
‘I now look forward to starting this new chapter in my career, to getting back on the field and helping Chippa retain their top-flight status.
‘Kapeluschnik confirms that after meeting with the chairman of Orlando Pirates Football Club, Dr Khoza gave his blessing for Rhulani to move on with his career and to join Chippa United.’
Mokwena will take charge of his first match when Chippa United take on Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 8:15pm.
