Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena admits they did not do their part as coaches, despite claiming a 3-2 victory over Royal AM at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The Brazilians opened up an 11-point gap at the top of the DStv Premiership standings after extending their unbeaten run this season to 14 games following their win over Royal AM.

Sundowns are top of the log standings with 34 points, having won 10 games and drawing only four and yet to concede a defeat, while Royal dropped down to fourth place on 22 points from 14 matches.

Mokwena insists they cannot fault their players for their performance against Royal, but admits his side have to analyse their performance and work on improving it ahead of their next fixture.

“One of those, we won’t spend a lot of time on this match because we had … OK, we won, but we move on,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV post-game.

“The less I say the better. Look, we also didn’t do our part as coaches. I think we didn’t prepare the team very well and you could see with the performance we struggled a little bit.

“But, OK, that’s one thing like AJ [Andile Jali] was talking now about controllables. That’s a controllable.

“It’s something we will analyse and get back on to try and improve the performance. But I hope there’s also analysis in other departments.”

Mokwena went on to praise Royal AM coach John Maduka as well as every other South African coach currently coaching in the DStv Premiership.

“But others … OK, good fight. I like Royal AM, I like the coaches. South African coaches are doing very well in this league. These local coaches, coach John Maduka is doing well,” he added.

“We’ve got Kaitano [Tembo] he’s doing well at SuperSport. Sekhukhune [United] have got a very good technical team, these coaches are doing very well and that’s good.

“It’s good for South African football. It’s good for the local coaches and they play very good football Royal AM. So, let’s rather stick to those.

“Let’s focus on the positives. Congratulations to them for fighting back from 3-0, good, we move on.”
