SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed that the club enquired about the possibility of signing Bidvest Wits midfielder Thabang Monare, but had their approach rebuffed because the midfielder wants to play for Kaizer Chiefs.
Matsatsantsa are looking to take advantage of the jumbo sale at the Clever Boys following the club’s sale to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
Monare is arguably the ideal replacement for departed captain Dean Furman and despite their interest Matthews admitted that the player wants to move to Naturena.
“When we enquired about the player Monare from Bidvest Wits, we were informed that the player had an interest in playing for Kaizer Chiefs,” Matthews told KickOff.com.
“And who can blame him for that if it’s true? It was only an enquiry and it never went further than that.”
Things, however, will not be straight forward for Amakhosi as they cannot sign any new players for the next two transfer windows unless FIFA suspends their transfer ban in September when their appeal is heard.
The SuperSport boss does not rule out another attempt to sign Monare if Amakhosi’s ban is not overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
“Depends on the terms but he is a good player and we would be interested in boosting our midfield,” he confirms.
Asked if there are any other players from Bidvest Wits that would be of interest to the MTN8 Champions and Matthews was not scared to make his intentions clear.
“Cole Alexander,” he responded. “Experienced cover for Dean. I have to see if TTM retain him, then we can talk.”
