Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes that Ugandan international Denis Onyango is incontestably the best goalkeeper in Africa.
The 33-year-old shot-stopper has been one of Sundowns’ standout performers this season, and has managed to produce some vital saves for the club in both the Absa Premiership and Caf Champions League.
This season, Onyango has already kept 11 clean sheets and conceded 18 goals from 26 appearances across all competitions.
However, Mosimane insists that there is no argument that Onyango is the best in the goalkeeping department, despite being compared with Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune.
‘No 1 in Africa, there’s no argument. You’ve got to do it at home [in the PSL], for your club, and internationally with your country,’ Mosimane said after their 2-1 victory over Black Leopards.
‘He has made some mistakes, but he has saved us at certain times. He is important for us, that’s why he’s here. We needed him in Rabat and he came to the party.’
Mamelodi Sundowns will now turn their attention to the Caf Champions League when they take on Wydad Casablanca in the semi-final return leg on Saturday, with kick-off set for 6pm.
