From tactical video sessions on balconies to limited training groups, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed some of the methods his team has employed to comply with Covid-19 protocols.
The Brazilians, like the rest of the league, are back in training as they prepare for a potential restart.
Sundowns have been in camp at the Royal Marang Hotel and conference centre in Rustenburg for more than two weeks, but continue to face challenges in their daily training.
Mosimane, with assistants Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena, have had to adjust to their normal way of working.
‘This thing when you’re training in Covid-19, it’s about being clever; it’s about finding alternatives, so you’ve got to think what you can do, even in training,’ Mosimane told the media.
‘We’re doing match analysis but we can’t all go into the conference room and sit there, so we do them outside on the balcony with good social distancing, and with a projector.
‘So, we struggle to get what the players are saying because they’ve got their masks on and you can’t hear the guys at the back because we use a big space.
‘And we can only do it at a certain time – we do it between 5pm and 6pm, only for 45 minutes because if we do it earlier, there’s the reflection of the sun and you can’t get anything from a projector.
‘If you want to go indoors, the doctors say, “No, we don’t want conference rooms with people inside where there’s no ventilation and all that in one space, it’s too dangerous.” So, that’s the challenges that we have but we make a plan.
‘We’re not complaining, we have trained well. We’ve got the conditioning up [but] the tactical awareness is not very good because, instead of 11-vs-11 to get your shape and movements, it’s not very easy, we train in departments and we don’t train the whole team.’
