Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane can’t explain why the move for Aubrey Modiba fell through, but admits he would have loved to have signed the winger.

SuperSport United CEO Stand Matthews announced last Friday that the Bafana Bafana international had signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal with Matsatsantsa after both the club and Modiba turned down offers from Downs.

Mosimane is a long-time admirer of the player and has been trying to sign Modiba for a number of years.

With the player signing a new contract it looks as though the transfer will never materialize, much to the disappointment of Mosimane.

‘I don’t want to talk about Aubrey because he is not our player, but we would have loved to have him here,’ Mosimane told reporters following his side’s 2-1 win over SuperSport in the Tshwane derby on Sunday.

‘I am happy that we did the right thing and we approached them [SuperSport] for the player and it was not successful. Maybe Sundowns can explain what happened because I don’t do transfers. I only ask if I can have this player or the other one,’ added Mosimane.

‘But he is a good player, and it is not in our hands because he is not our player. If he decided to stay and renew the contract he knows why. We should give SuperSport the respect. They wanted Lucky [Mohomi] and pulled out of the deal also and I don’t know why. It’s football. You can’t always get what you want,’ he concluded.
