Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes that Gaston Sirino would help Bafana Bafana, saying he would love to see the forward play for the national team.
The 28-year-old was born in Uruguay but moved to South Africa in January 2018.
Sirino has since gone on to establish himself as one of the top players in the country as he helped Downs to back-to-back Absa Premiership titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The forward is yet to play for the Uruguayan national side and will thus be available for selection for Bafana if he takes up South African citizenship, which Mosimane would love to see.
‘I would love to see him play for South Africa, why not? Because he is probably not going to take Luis Suarez out of the [Uruguay] national team, so he can help us,’ Mosimane told the media.
‘We have seen the whole French national team is full of African players because of French colonisation.
‘We should probably also look at the nationalities of children who are born here, maybe we should look at it differently and see what we can get from that,’ he continued.
‘But those African children who are born in Europe go through proper structures. If we fix the youth structures, we will benefit like the other countries that have benefited,’ he concluded.
It will, however, still be a while before the forward would qualify for nationalisation – a minimum of five years’ residence in the country is required.
