Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele says their target is to finish in the Absa Premiership top three in order to qualify for a place in the African continental competition next year.

The Glamour Boys currently sit fifth in the Absa Premiership standings with 35 points after 23 games and trail log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by eight points, with eight games remaining in the season.

Mphahlele says his side are focusing on claiming glory in the Nedbank Cup while also aiming for a top-three finish in the hopes of qualifying for the Caf Champions League or Confederation Cup next season.

‘In football, you always have to find something to play for, the possibilities are we might not finish first,’ Mphahlele told KickOff.com.

‘We can finish second or third. That should be the goal. If we don’t finish first, we must finish second. That’s the target, and also the Nedbank Cup.’

The Amakhosi defender says he is relishing the chances to play in the Caf competition, having last appeared in the tournament during his spell at Sundowns.

‘Ever since I came here, we never actually played Caf [competitions]. We never actually spoke about it but obviously, if it comes, we will give it everything that we have,’ he added.

‘I don’t know about the seriousness of the club but if we do qualify for the Champions League, we will have a go on it because there is more at stake now.’

Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping to claim all three points when they welcome AmaZulu to the FNB Stadium when the two side’s battle it out in the Absa Premiership, with kick-off set for 18:00.
