Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego Mphela says his playing days are over as he prepares for life after football.

The 34-year-old has been without a club for two seasons after sustaining a ligament injury during his time with Royal Eagles in the National First Division (NFD).

Speaking to the media at the MTN8 launch, Mphela explained the reason behind calling time on his illustrious playing career.

‘I haven’t announced it officially, but I know in my mind and my body is telling me that I am done,’ Mphela told the media.

‘The last season I played [for Royal Eagles] I tore my ligaments and when I got back I was not the same, and even now it still hurts. So I tried to do sessions with a couple of teams, but I can’t finish the sessions. Basically, I am done. I have to be honest about it.’

Speaking about life after football, Mphela said he would like to earn his coaching badges after having already started coaching young kids at Sports Plus Academy in Kempton Park.

‘I don’t know for sure, but because of the passion I think I will do my coaching badges – and I have already started coaching young kids. I think I will do it, become a coach.’ he added.

Over the course of his career, Mphela scored 89 goals from 238 appearances in all competitions playing for Jomo Cosmos, RC Strasbourg Alsace, Stade Reims, SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Royal Eagles FC.

On an international level, ‘Killer’ made 53 appearances and bagged a total of 23 goals for Bafana Bafana since his debut back in February 2005 under then coach Stuart Baxter.
