Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango believes the 2019-20 season needs to be concluded when the coronavirus pandemic has passed, adding that the title can’t be handed to Kaizer Chiefs based on their lead.
The Soweto giants top the Absa Premiership by just four points, with the Brazilians in second place although they still hold a game in hand on the Glamour Boys which could cut the gap to just one point.
With Chiefs still scheduled to play Sundowns and Bidvest Wits twice, the league title race was far from over when the coronavirus pandemic hit South Africa.
Speaking to the Daily Sun, Onyango insisted that his side are the title holders and they do not want to hand it over unless it’s fairly won off them.
‘Hand over the trophy to Chiefs? That might be a problem. We are the title holders and would not want to relinquish it so easily like that,’ said the keeper.
The 33-year-old believes that handing Chiefs the title could cause issues with clubs fighting for other places in the league such as avoiding relegation.
‘What about the other guys who are fighting relegation,’ he asked.
‘They might say, “Hey, wait a minute, we still have a chance to survive relegation.” The teams in the NFD fighting for promotion or playoff position would also feel hard done by as they have a chance to be in the PSL.
‘Chiefs supporters will say, “Yes, give us the trophy because we are leading” but Sundowns supporters would argue as well – it is a very difficult situation,’ continued Onyango.
‘The season will resume and people must just be ready and not take the easy way out. Why do you need to cancel it? It will be cheating the sponsors as well. If Chiefs were to take the league, let them take it having played all the matches.
‘Let’s wait for the coronavirus to pass, for how long it lasts, but the 30-match season must be honoured.’
