Kaizer Chiefs forward Bernard Parker has urged the more experienced players in the squad to take charge as they enter the 2019-20 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.

The Glamour Boys are set to renew their rivalry with Orlando Pirates when the two sides square off in the eighth edition of the Carling Black Label Cup on Saturday.

They have already bolstered their squad for the new campaign after securing the services of James Kotei, Kearyn Baccus, Lazarous Kambole and Samir Nurkovic.

However, Parker believes the club’s new signings will add great value to the squad as they attempt to end their four-year trophy drought.

‘Yes, they do understand [what they are in for]. We have done a lot of work in pre-season not only on the field but also on the mental part of football,’ Parker told the media.

‘They have said “yes”, and they do understand that we have not won anything in the past four years. They are here to definitely add value and to win things with the club.

‘We as senior players have welcomed them well and explained to them that they need to come in and help us. We have told them of the direction the club needs to take and where we need to be.’

The 33-year-old added that it is up to the senior players in the squad to stand up and take responsibility following their below-par campaign during the 2018-19 season.

‘They haven’t shown anything less. They have been on top of their performances, the synergy and energy towards what we are looking at,’ he added.

‘They have been more or less performing and that is a wake-up call for the rest of the guys who have been here longer that they need to stand up, own up and take charge and do what needs to be done.’

The match at the FNB Stadium kicks off at 3pm.
