Orlando Pirates forward Thembinkhosi Lorch has admitted that he would like to win the Player of the Season award, but stressed that team success comes before any personal glory.
The 25-year-old has been one of the first names on the Buccaneers team sheet this season, and is arguably enjoying the best season of his young career.
Lorch has been a consistent performer for the Sea Robbers as he has gone on to score 10 goals, while also grabbing four assists across all competitions this season.
After putting in yet another man-of-the-match performance against AmaZulu this past weekend, Lorch has been touted by many as a contender for the highest individual honour in the league awards.
Lorch was subsequently asked outright about the award after the game against AmaZulu, where he admitted that he has an eye on the prize, but insisted that the success of the team will come before his own interests.
‘I think it is important to focus on the team first and help the team do well, then I will come after,’ Lorch told the media.
‘But yes, I would like to be the Player of the Season, you know. But like I said, I have to first focus on the team.’
Lorch’s coach Milutin Sredojevic, on the other hand, was quick to take the pressure off his star man.
‘He is a player that is making a difference. We know he will give his services to the team first. So, we won’t speak about him being a candidate. We think whatever we say, he will top with his performances,’ the Pirates boss said to the media.
