Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes coach Benni McCarthy should have been given more time to succeed at Cape Town City.
McCarthy recently parted ways with the Citizens after his contract with the club was terminated following a run of two wins in 18 matches.
The Bafana Bafana all-time leading scorer led the team to glory in the last season when they beat SuperSport United 4-1 to clinch the MTN8 trophy.
However, Mosimane has come to the defence of McCarthy, stating that he should have been given more time to excel as a coach as he has achieved more than most coaches in the PSL.
‘It’s a sad one, I never saw that one coming. It’s sad and unbelievable,’ Mosimane told the media.
‘I never thought Benni would ever take coaching this seriously to be honest. He really came out and took it to another level.
‘His team was playing very well. Of course, they were not winning many games this year but they were playing well, a good team.
‘I mean a guy is two years [as a head coach], he’s already won a cup. I mean two years, he’s won a cup.
‘Do you want to do research and see coaches in this country who have been coaching for more than 10 years and haven’t won a cup?
‘I talk on the side of coaches because team owners will say, “Hey, we haven’t won for the last seven games”, but he didn’t lose those seven games, he drew four or three.
‘I mean two years with a guy who gave you a cup, give him a chance, hey, and he’s playing good football. But who am I?’
