Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes that his side were never at risk of losing out on the Absa Premiership title this campaign, writes DEAN WORKMAN.
Victory over Ajax Cape Town two weeks ago combined with Orlando Pirates losing to Cape Town City saw the Brazilians crowned champions.
Sundowns overcame a congested fixture schedule to become champions but were pushed till the second last week by Pirates.
When asked at a press conference for the monthly Absa Premiership awards at the PSL head offices in Johannesburg, if he ever feared a slip-up, Pitso said: ‘Of course we have experience, we know how to do it.
‘I don’t understand why everyone was doubting because the league was never ever at risk, because we have been there [at the top] so many months, so many months and the only thing that contributed to those questions is that at one stage we were eight points clear and then it has never been lower than four.
‘Really four points it means we need to lose, its two games. Even if you lose one match we still have a point [advantage] and we have the goals. So, of course we need to respect the challengers to us.
‘There was probably a scare, there was closeness, but it has never been at risk for many months.
‘But it’s okay because its good because the league must never be boring and everyone must just stay focused. I think ya, it was never at risk,’ concluded the 2016 Caf Coach of the Season.
The newly crowned champions will receive their trophy after their last game of the season against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium, with kickoff at 3pm.
