Platinum Stars have been relegated to the National First Division (NFD) after a 2-1 loss to AmaZulu at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday.
A run of poor results saw Dikwena rooted to the bottom of the table and they knew, coming into the clash against AmaZulu, that their fate was not in their hands.
Roger De Sa’s team needed results to go their way, as they needed SuperSport United to lose in order to keep their top-flight status alive for at least another round.
Stars knew that they needed to put in a major performance of their own and secure the three points before worrying about anyone else’s results. They, however, suffered a 2-1 defeat, while SuperSport United scored a late winner against Free State Stars to win 3-2 and confirm Dikwena’s relegation to the NFD.
It is still extremely tight at the bottom of the table and there will be a number of teams desperate to pick up points in the remaining fixtures in order to stay clear of the 15th spot on the log, as the team who finishes second from the bottom will be plunged into the promotion/relegation playoffs.
