The PSL disciplinary committee is finally set to address the two assault charges handed to Mamelodi Sundowns forward Gaston Sirino on Tuesday evening, with the Uruguayan possibly facing a lengthy ban.
The forward was charged months ago after he hit SuperSport United players Clayton Daniels and captain Dean Furman during the MTN8 semi-final second-leg encounter on 18 December.
Sirino, who had pleaded not guilty to the charges, was only shown a yellow card by referee Eugen Mdluli, but the disciplinary committee decided to take retrospective action on the charges of assault.
The Mamelodi Sundowns coach has had the forward at his disposal the past few months but that could all change when the DC panel meets on Tuesday evening.
PSL prosecutor Nande Becker told SoccerLaduma that the reason behind the delay was the disruptions caused by the festive period.
‘The panel will be sitting tonight [Tuesday], and if there is a ruling it will be communicated. We’ve been held back by the December holidays because things slow down for most lawyers between December 15 and January 16. I am not even sure we will have the same panel,’ Becker explained.
If Sirino is suspended it will come as a big blow to Downs, who are aiming to chase down Absa Premiership log-leaders Kaizer Chiefs, who sit seven points clear.
