SuperSport United and Swallows FC have put pressure on current DStv Premiership log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after reducing the defending champions’ lead at the top of the table this past weekend.
Friday, 12 February:
Stellenbosch FC 1-3 Golden Arrows
Lamontville Golden Arrows cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium through goals from Pule Mmodi and Michael Gumede, while Stellies scored a consolation goal via Junior Mendieta.
The win took Abafana Bes’thende to fourth place in the league standings, level on 28 points with fifth-placed Orlando Pirates, while Stellies remained 12th on the log with 15 points.
Maritzburg United 0-1 Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila
A goal from Thabo Mnyamane guided Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila to a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The victory moved Vhadau Vha Damani out of the relegation zone and into 14th place in the league standings with 12 points, while the Team of Choice slipped down to the 15th spot – level on nine points with bottom-of-the-table Black Leopards.
Saturday, 13 February:
Bloemfontein Celtic 1-1 Chippa United
10-man Bloemfontein Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein after Bienvenu Eva Nga’s second-half equaliser cancelled out Victor Letsoalo’s opener.
However, Siwelele were forced to play most of the game with a man less after Tshepo Rikhotso was shown his marching orders just before half time.
Celtic have now moved up to eighth place in the league standings, while the Chilli Boys remain in 13th, five points above the relegation zone.
SuperSport United 2-1 Cape Town City
SuperSport United closed the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns to just two points after edging Cape Town City 2-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville through goals from Gamphani Lungu and Thamsanqa Gabuza.
Matsatsantsa have now moved up to second place in the league standings, having played one more game than Sundowns, while City remains in sixth following a second straight defeat, 10 points off top spot.
Sunday, 14 February:
Swallows FC 0-0 AmaZulu
Swallows FC were forced to share the spoils with AmaZulu after playing out to a goalless draw at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday afternoon.
The draw extended the Birds’ unbeaten run in the league to 15 games, moving them to third place in the league standings three points behind Sundowns, while Usuthu remained seventh on the log with 22 points after 16 games played so far this season.
