Cape Town City coach Jan Olde Riekerink has urged his side to be more ruthless in front of goal after their defeat by Kaizer Chiefs.

The Citizens suffered their seventh defeat in the Absa Premiership after losing 3-0 to Amakhosi at the FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Leonardo Castro, Samir Nurkovic and Eric Mathoho stretched Chiefs’ lead at the top of the league standings to nine points, while City dropped down to 13th place on 17 points after 18 matches played so far this season.

The Dutchman was happy with the team’s overall performance but wants his side to start converting their chances in the final third.

‘Not so difficult – football is about scoring goals and if they score three and we score zero, it’s good, they deserve to win,’ Riekerink told SuperSport TV post-game.

‘We started not good, I don’t know why, the composure, they were very motivated, they worked very hard. First five to 15 minutes it was about the altitude or the weather, we were very tight and then we opened up.

‘I think we got three very good opportunities. Every game we play good we have great chances. Today we did, so we have to go on, but I have to make my team compliment for what we tried to achieve, but in the end we get three high balls, the same balls as against AmaZulu, and there were three goals.

‘Now we have two home games, I know what we can do. By some phases in the game we really played good football, we had good solutions and I’m happy to be the coach of the guys because they work hard. I have 100% no question that we have to finalise the game and not only play good football.

‘I trust my team, I like the way they work, only today three high balls, three goals and we played better, but it’s not points – so sometimes that’s also a way to win the game.’
