Sandal Zuke challenged by Percy Tau

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Manqoba Ngwenya insists Percy Tau needs to improve his ‘decision-making’ in the final third in order to get on the scoresheet regularly.

The 23-year-old, who helped his side qualify for the quarter-final of the Caf Champions League, and helped them secure a second-place finish in the Absa Premiership, scored eight goals and created a further eight in 47 appearances in all competitions during the 2016-17 campaign.

Tau also faces stiff competition for the Absa Premiership Player’s Player of the Year from the likes of Cape Town City duo Lebogang Manyama and Aubrey Ngoma.

Ngwenya says he is delighted with Tau’s progression since returning from his loan spell at National First Division side Witbank Spurs, but he believes that the striker has to be more relentless in front of goal.

‘I’m happy with the progress of Tau and he’s doing well, even though sometimes his decision-making is not right,’ Ngwenya told KickOff.com.

‘I think other people tend to see that [decision-making] and start criticising him for the fact that he’s not scoring enough, or he is being selfish and that creeps into your game as the player when you are not getting goals.

‘His work rate and the runs that he makes, creating places for other players. I just like the way he’s so dedicated.’

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to play Wydad United in the first leg of the Caf Champions League quarter-final on 8 September, with the kick-off time and venue yet to be decided.
