Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic says that numerically speaking, his side are still within a chance of lifting the Absa Premiership title at the end of the season.
The Buccaneers’ hopes of lifting the league trophy this season took a major setback after they were held to a 2-2 draw against Cape Town City at Athlone Stadium over the weekend.
Pirates have now lost their advantage over fellow title-contenders Mamelodi Sundowns, who will have the opportunity to go top of the league standings with a win in their penultimate game against Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday.
Sredojevic says their main objective is to finish the campaign with a maximum points tally of 57, which could be enough for them to secure the title if Sundowns drop points in any of their final two matches.
‘I have no right to speak. Mathematics is a very simple science. We have 54 points, we can have a maximum of 57 points,’ Sredojevic told the media.
‘Our only concern at present is to look to get 57 points. Whether that will be enough to make us mathematically champions, we can speak after that.
‘Before that, let us be sincere and honest, it is something that is at present, with two matches to go [for Sundowns], unfortunately not on our side.’
Orlando Pirates will welcome Polokwane City at the Orlando Stadium in their final match of the season, which kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
