SoccerClub looks back at some of the most memorable statistics and records during Bidvest Wits’ 99 years of existence.
Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila shocked the South African football world when boss Masala Mulaudzi announced the purchase of the Braamfontein-based outfit.
The team will play at Thohoyandou Stadium as their home ground next season.

2020 – The club will cease to exist at the conclusion of the 2019-20 Premier Soccer League season after Bidvest confirmed that it had reached an agreement for the sale of the club’s top-flight status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM).
1921 – The year the club was formed by the university’s students representatives council.
1975 – The club competed in a variety of tournaments and leagues before eventually winning promotion to the National Football League in 1975, then South Africa’s top domestic league.
1978 – The club won their first major title in 1978 – winning the Mainstay Cup after beating Kaizer Chiefs in the final of the competition.
1975 – The club’s first big star arrived as a first-year student in 1975 and immediately made a strong impression. Gary Bailey went on to play for Manchester United and received his first England cap in March 1985.
1948 – Won their first major trophy by bagging the Southern Transvaal First Division title in 1948.
1930 – The year the club formed an U20 team, which was the start of the now-famous youth policy.
415 – Wits defender Peter Gordan holds the record for the most starts for the club.
268 – Zimbabwean midfielder Charles Yohane is the most-capped player with 268 appearances from 1997 to 2006.
55 – Peter Gordan has the record for scoring the most goals for the club.
46 – Scottish forward Andy Geddes holds the record for the most starts in a season in 1986.
1930 – Eight years after the club was formed, the first team played their first match on grass.
29 – Scottish striker Frank McGrellis scored the most goals in a season for the Students in 1985.
14 – The Clever Boys’ biggest win came against Cardiff City in the Mainstay Cup on 16 September 1986 when they beat the English side 14-0.
10 – The number of silverware titles Wits has picked up along the way, including the Absa Premiership, two Nedbank Cup trophies, three Telkom Knockout Cups, three MTN8 titles and one National First Division trophy.
6 – The club’s record defeat came at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs, who beat them 6-1 in the National Soccer League (NSL) on 14 October 1990.
1 – In the 2016-17 season Bidvest Wits won their first PSL title after finishing the season with 18 wins, six draws and six losses, and won the league by three points in a tightly contested season.
