Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off the DStv Premiership campaign with a 2-0 win over Cape Town City on Friday evening.
The Brazilians started the game on the front foot and created their first opening with 12 minutes as Haashim Domingo flashed a half-volley just over the crossbar after being picked out by a cutback by Aubrey Modiba.
City then had a chance of their own right minutes later but Thabo Nodada missed the target from point blank range after getting on the end of a Khanyisa Mayo pass.
After an open first half where neither side could find the killer pass or touch, Downs finally broke the deadlock on the hour-mark as Modiba curled home a stunning free-kick into the top corner.
Two minutes later and the visitors doubled their lead as Themba Zwane produced a quality finish to beat Marques after getting on the end of Domingo’s impressive pass.
Tinkler’s team fought hard to get back into the game and pegged Sundowns back in the closing stages, but the Brazilians managed to hold onto their clean sheet and start the season with a 2-0 win.
