Mamelodi Sundowns recorded a resounding 5-0 victory against arch-rivals SuperSport United in their Absa Premiership encounter on Thursday evening.
Sundowns dominated proceedings from the get-go and should’ve taken the lead as early as the fourth minute when Hlompho Kekana’s trademark pass found Percy Tau in space, but the forward placed his effort straight at the onrushing goalkeeper.
The home side grew in confidence and were gifted another opportunity to score a minute later ,but Tau again proved wasteful as he blasted his effort over the bar with no pressure.
Stuart Baxter’s side failed to get into their rhythm and were punished for their static defending when Tau’s attempted cross deflected off Clayton Daniels to give Sundowns a deserved 1-0 lead.
Sundowns went in search for the second and almost found it courtesy of Kekana’s header in the 14th minute, but the crossbar came to SuperSport’s aid with Reyaad Pieterse beaten.
The Brazilians doubled their lead in the 18th minute when Themba Zwane turned home from close range after some good work by Mzikayise Mashaba.
Sundowns added a third in the 26th minute as Billiat’s back pass found Mashaba on-the-run and the defender blasted his effort past the goalkeeper.
Billiat got his name onto the score-sheet in fine fashion when his grasscutter in the 44th minute ricocheted in-off the post to give his side a healthy lead heading into the half-time break.
SuperSport organised themselves a bit more in the second half and almost pulled one back just after the half-time break but Michael Boxall’s effort was saved by Denis Onyango.
Billiat grabbed his brace in the 62nd minute when his first-time finish from Tebogo Langerman’s cut-back evaded Pieterse to give his side a 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Cape Town City maintained their title aspirations following a 4-2 victory against Platinum Stars in their Absa Premiership encounter at the Moruleng Stadium courtesy of strikes by Thabo Nodada, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Judas Mosemaedi and Aubrey Ngoma, while Enocent Mkhabela and Henrico Botes managed to get onto the scoresheet for Dikwena.
