Mamelodi Sundowns and former Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise have parted ways after the two parties mutually agreed on not triggering the one-year option on his contract.

The 34-year-old who missed his side’s Caf Champions League trip to Tunisia was reportedly set for negotiations with the Chloorkop based-outfit regarding his future, but following a sit-down with his agent and the club, the two parties decided against the extension of his stay at the ckub for another year.

Modise arrived at Sundowns in 2011 from Orlando Pirates and enjoyed a successful six-year tenure which saw him clinch six trophies including two Absa Premiership titles, the Champions League and the Caf Super Cup title to name a few during his stay with Masandawana.

Pitso Moismane’s side released an official statement publicing the details of the split.

“Mamelodi Sundowns has decided to release Teko Modise from his contractual obligations in order for him to negotiate a good contract for himself at this stage of his football career,” the statement read.

“Mamelodi Sundowns is grateful to Teko for his many years of loyal service to the Club and wishes him everything of the very best.

“Teko played an important part in the two PSL titles and the CAF Championship as well as the CAF Super Cup which Mamelodi Sundowns won during the past season,” the statment concluded.

The former SuperSport United midfielder was previously linked with a host of club including Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City.

With the former PSL Football Of The Year now a free agent, the need to secure a team in the top-flight has never proved greater for Modise, but his huge reported wage bill could prove a spanner in the works for possible suitors.
