Mamelodi Sundowns claimed their first win in the Absa Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

The game was delayed by 10 minutes due to bad lighting at the stadium.

When the game eventually got started, the Brazilians dominated possession, but it was City who were the first to threaten when Vusimuzi Mngomezulu produced a strike at goal, but he guided his effort wide of the target.

Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 18th minute after Ricardo Nascimento latched on to a cross from Gaston Sirino before he headed the ball home to make it 1-0.

At the other end, Rise and Shine were struggling in attack and failed to break down the Sundowns defence.

The visitors were then dealt a major blow when goalkeeper Denis Onyango was stretchered off the field after taking an elbow to the neck. He was subsequently replaced by Kennedy Mweene.

Polokwane nearly pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time, but Mbulelo Wagaba fired his effort wide of goal.

Sundowns went into the break with a 1-0 lead over Polokwane.

The visitors started the second half the same way they did the first and doubled their lead when Lebohang Maboe’s header found the net following a well-placed cross from Lyle Lakay.

After conceding two goals, Polokwane opted to make a change when they introduced Walter Musona to replace Wagaba.

Pitso Mosimane opted to make a change of his own eight minutes later when Jose Ali Meza replaced striker Jeremy Brockie.

The home side pressed forward in the closing stages of the game, but were unable to break down the visitors’ defence.

However, Sundowns managed to hold on to their 2-0 lead over City until the final whistle to claim their first win of the season.
