Ramahlwe Mphahlele believes that his former club Mamelodi Sundowns will be feeling the pressure in the title race, writes DEAN WORKMAN.

Speaking at a Kaizer Chiefs media day on Thursday, Mphahlele – who has been a part of title-winning teams at Sundowns – admitted the difficulties of being at the top: ‘It is very, very difficult, honestly speaking, because you know that there are teams behind you and that they are very capable of catching you.

‘They [Sundowns] know that Orlando Pirates are there, Maritzburg are there, we [Kaizer Chiefs] are there and Free State as well. They are human beings and they will feel the pressure. They will know that they can’t drop points because if they drop points, the other guys are coming.

‘As much as it is difficult to chase, it’s also difficult being on top because everyone who is playing against you wants your place and wants to beat No 1.’

The Bafana Bafana defender, however, pointed out that Sundowns do have experience of being in a similar position that will help. ‘They have the experience, they have been there, and they know how to handle the pressure. Do I think they will crack? Yes, I hope they do but if they don’t, it will be good for their team.’

Mphahlele and his Kaizer Chiefs teammates will be hoping to close the gap with Sundowns when they take on AmaZulu in the Absa Premiership this weekend.
