Jeremy Brockie netted his first goal as Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs to claim the first-ever Shell Helix Cup at FNB Stadium on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The Brazilians came out with intent and nearly took the lead early on when Gaston Sirino beat his marker before attempting a strike at goal. The wing, unfortunately, failed to direct his effort towards the target.
At the other end, Amakhosi were still trying to find their rhythm in the game but were threatening on the counter with the pace of former Sundowns forward Khama Billiat.
Billiat had a great chance to hand his side the lead two minutes from the break, but Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene did well to clear his effort off the line.
Chiefs should’ve taken the lead moments later when Siphiwe Tshabalala set up Billiat for a simple tap-in, but Mweene was once again on hand to deny the Zimbabwean.
Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns went into the half-time break with the score level at 0-0.
Sundowns picked up where they left off and broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half when Brockie slotted the ball home from close range after Anthony Laffor’s effort deflected off the post.
Leonardo Castro nearly levelled matters two minutes later after producing an overhead kick, but Mweene did well to prevent his acrobatic effort from finding the net.
Themba Zwane all but sealed the win for Sundowns in stoppage time when his side-footed strike found the top corner to make it 2-0.
Bernard Parker managed to net a consolation goal for Chiefs with the last kick of the game from a corner kick.
However, the Brazilians held on to their lead until the final whistle to lift the Shell Helix Cup at the FNB Stadium.
