SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo believes his side could have snatched a late win in their six-goal thriller against Cape Town City.
Matsatsantsa were forced to share the spoils with the Citizens after playing out to a 3-3 draw at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday.
The draw moved Matsatsantsa up to fourth place in the league standings, while the Citizens progressed to eighth spot.
However, Tembo admits that his side started making poor decisions after opening the scoring in the fourth minute courtesy of Sipho Mbule.
‘We had a very good start and we scored an early goal. After that, we began making negative passes and choosing negative options. We played backwards,’ Tembo told SuperSport TV after the game.
‘That’s when they came back into the match and soon they started gaining momentum. They scored and dominated a little bit. But we came back into the game.
‘Overall, we did not defend well. We are better than what we did tonight, but at the same time, we played against a very good team. It is a well-taken point.’
In-form strikers Thamsanqa Gabuza and Bradley Grobler continued their scoring run against the Citizens, but Tembo believes that the match could have gone in anyone’s favour.
‘It was a game of six goals because there were a lot of chances. It could have gone either way. We could have snatched it and they also could have done the same thing as well,’ he added.
‘Both teams played offensive football and that’s why the final score was 3-3. It could have been more.’
SuperSport United will now shift their focus to the MTN8 semi-final second leg when they take on Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday, with kick-off set for 7:30pm.
