South African Football Association (Safa) acting CEO Tebogo Motlanthe has confirmed that the dates of the transfer window are likely to change in accordance with the completion dates of the 2019-20 season.
The league in South Africa has been suspended since March and despite lockdown restrictions having been eased, the completion of the football season still looks some way off. Sports minister Nathi Mthethwa’s department is still only assessing the league’s proposal to return to training.
Safa has been in contact with world football governing body Fifa about the developments in the country amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fifa has agreed that each member state will be allowed to determine new dates for their respective winter registration periods. Amid the uncertainty in various leagues across the world, South Africa’s transfer market is almost certain to be pushed back to fall in line with the completion of the season.
‘We are waiting for the government to give us dates. Of course, we have written to Fifa to say that the league will go beyond the 30th [of June] so the transfer window is likely to change,’ Motlanthe told KickOff.com.
‘But Fifa will want the government directive as to when the games will resume and when are they going to end [before the transfer window dates are determined].’
This means that any player without a contract at the end of June – and who has failed to agree any extension – will be without a club until Safa and Fifa announce the new transfer window dates.
