SoccerClub reflects on the day when Bafana Bafana’s all-time goalscorer, Benni McCarthy, netted on debut for Orlando Pirates during the 2011-12 season.
After leaving West Ham United, McCarthy trained with former club Ajax Cape Town during the off-season. However, on 2 August, the Buccaneers confirmed the signing of McCarthy on a two-year deal, ending his 14-year spell in Europe.
Goals from Bongani Ndulula and Benni McCarthy had the Soweto giants securing a 2-0 victory over Black Leopards at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on 12 August, the opening day of the Absa Premiership.
McCarthy went on to score a total of 13 goals and assisted a further five from 29 appearances in all competitions that season to help Pirates secure their second consecutive league title.
