Warriors came from behind to beat Coastal United 2-1 on Saturday afternoon to win the inaugural DStv Compact Cup while Dinaledi beat Amabutho 1-0 to win the third/fourth-place playoff.
The Coastal United side got off to a dream start as they were 1-0 up in the opening minute when Ahley Du Preez broke through on the counter and produced a cool finish to beat Itumeleng Khune.
It did not, however, take Warriors long to respond as Gamildien expertly curled a shot into the top corner after being slipped through on goal moments after United’s opener.
Mpho Makola forced Khune into a smart save in the 24th minute but it was the Warriors who looked most threatening.
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, who was voted to come on by fans at half time in place of Mosele, looked to give his side a spark going forward.
It was the Warriors, though, who grabbed the lead seven minutes before time as Gamildien got on a through-ball by Thabo Matlaba to complete his brace with a smart finish past Oscarine Masuluke.
Substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa had a big chance to bury the game for Dylan Kerr’s men in stoppage time after going through on goal in the six-yard box but was denied by Masuluke.
With the final result 2-1, Warriors have clinched the first-ever crown.
Meanwhile in the third/fourth-place playoff earlier in the day, Dinaledi edged Amabutho 1-0 to ensure they didn’t finish last in the tournament.
Dinaledi made wholesale changes, with only Gaston Sirino, Sello Motsepe and Nyiko Mobbie retaining their places in the lineup while Amabutho made a number of alterations, with the likes of Bonginkosi Ntuli and Leletu Skelem brought to the fore.
In what was a tight first half, Lesedi Kapinga got his team off to the perfect start as he unleashed a venomous strike, with just four minutes gone, which flew into the top corner.
Dan Malesela’s charges got off to the perfect start after Lesedi Kapinga opened the scoring in the fourth minute, with a stunning strike from outside the box swerving into the top corner.
Amabutho were trying to get back into the game but did not look like threatening Riyad Pieterese’s goal.
There was not much in the way of goal-mouth action in the second half as Dialedi took third and Amabutho finished last.
