After the moment of madness against Black Leopards, Orlando Pirates striker Thamsanqa Gabuza has apologised to the supporters of the Soweto giants.

After playing a role in his side’s opening goal in their 2-1 win over Leopards, Gabuza responded to the fans by throwing his playing jersey into the crowd before walking down the tunnel and disappearing from action.

The 31-year-old was later red-carded for his action by the match referee. He received two yellow cards, one for enticing the fans and a second for leaving the field.

Gabuza has been the subject of mass debate online and he took to Twitter to apologise to the fans through the club’s official account.

The emotional video reveals that the striker still has the backing of his teammates and coach as he was surrounded by the entire Orlando Pirates squad, including technical staff.

‘To the supporters of Pirates, I would like to sincerely apologise for what happened in the game against Leopards where I took off my jersey and threw it to the supporters and for walking off the field.

As the players, we represent the team from the dressing room and on to the field we do our best to win the game and to make the supporters happy. It’s not like we go there to make the team lose. It was my frustration that while I was playing I heard comments that I should be substituted.

But I apologise profusely for what I did. What happened was not right and I’m really, really sorry and I’m repeating it again: I’m very, very sorry [translated],’ said Gabuza.
