Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes of strengthening their squad ahead of the new season are looking grim as the club’s football manager, Bobby Motaung, has revealed that they still haven’t heard anything from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding their transfer ban.
Chiefs would have been hoping to compete with the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in trying to take advantage of the mega sale at Bidvest Wits and the possible need of clubs to let go of their top talent to balance the books following the coronavirus pandemic.
Chiefs, though, are currently under a strict transfer ban handed down by Fifa in February over the signing of ‘Dax’ Andrianarimanana from Madagascan side Fosa Juniors.
Amakhosi almost immediately pleaded their innocence and went on the offensive to try to get the ban overturned.
Their appeal has however been curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic with their hearing with CAS being pushed back to 9 September.
Amakhosi football manager Bobby Motaung told KickOff.com that the club have no choice but to wait on the decision from CAS.
‘We have appealed [the Fifa ban], so we’ll wait. We’re going in September. We still haven’t received a response on that [request for a suspension],’ said Motaung.
Although the league is yet to announce when the 2019-20 season will be completed, it is expected that next season will start at the beginning of September. This may give Chiefs a slim hope of having their ban overturned or suspended, allowing them to dip into the market before the window slams shut.
