The Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN) could be on the verge of selling Premier Soccer League side Platinum Stars, according to reports.

Dikwena finished off their 2016-17 Absa Premiership campaign in ninth place with 37 points, narrowly missing out on a top-eight finish, which would’ve seen them qualify for next season’s MTN8.

A source confirmed that high-level discussions have taken place at the Royal Bafokeng Supreme Council about the future of the club. It is understood that if a decision how the club should be run and structured is not made in the upcoming days, the club will be forced to sell.

‘It is an undeniable fact that there have been discussions at a higher level of the Supreme Council, but nothing concrete has been decided on the way forward,’ according to a source at The Sowetan.

‘This is a sensitive issue for the leaders in the area because there are many serious things related to social welfare of the people, like water‚ sanitation‚ health‚ infrastructure and education which are top priorities for them.

‘In all honesty‚ RBN would not have a problem continuing to run a professional football team, but they are under pressure because their mandate is to look after the interests of the people in the communities.

‘It is not a secret among high-placed people in the authority that they are looking at creative ways in which they can continue to own and support the club, without spending too much money like they are doing now.’

Meanwhile, Dikwena have been preparing themselves for their upcoming final Group B encounter in the Caf Confederation Cup against MC Alger on Friday, 30 June 2017.

The match at the Stade du 5 Juillet kicks off at 22:00.
