Ronwen Williams’ late heroics earned SuperSport United a 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon as Amakhoi saw their winless run extended to six games.

Chiefs came into the game desperate to get back to winning ways, while SuperSport were looking to keep the pressure on league-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Hunt made a number of changes to his starting lineup taking out the suspended Darrel Matsheke and demoting Philani Zulu to the bench, while Anthony Akumu, Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande, Njabulo Blom and Leonardo Castro also came into the starting lineup.

Chiefs started on the front foot and created the first chance early on after Castro held up the ball before releasing Parker down the left flank. The veteran whipped in a dangerous cross which was poorly cleared and fell to the Colombian on the edge of the box, but his first-time show shot blocked brilliantly by Matsatsantsa defender Bongani Khumalo.

Kaitano Tembo created an opening of their oen seven minutes later as Jamie Webber whipped in a corner, flicked on by Evans Rusike to the far post, but Reeve Frosler was well positioned to clear the ball off the line.

Amakhosi were applying the pressure and it eventually resulted in the opening goal as Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s corner was headed out to Frosler, who curled a sumptuous effort into the far corner.

It was 0-0 at the break with Chiefs deservedly in front.

Matsatsantsa came out with intention in the second half and called the under-pressure Itumeleng Khune into action on the half-hour mark as Sipho Mule fired a shot towards the Amakhosi shotstopper, who got down well to his left to make the save.

Just six minutes later and SuperSport had their leveller as Garuda was brought down in the box by Akumu and the referee pointed to the spot. The league’s top-scorer, Bradley Grobler, stepped up and sent Khune the wrong way to notch up his 13th goal of the season.

Chiefs were inches away from taking the lead heading into the closing stages as Akumu saw his header brilliantly tipped on to the bar by Williams.

Williams was again the hero with five minutes left to play as Siyabonga Ngezana cut the ball back to Ngcobo, who fired his shot towards the bottom left-hand corner but it was well tipped away by Williams as the sides were forced to settle for a point apiece.
