Defending champions Bidvest Wits handed Baroka their first defeat in the Absa Premiership this campaign after securing a 1-0 victory at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, writes Dylan Appolis.
Kgoloko Thobejane’s side extended their unbeaten run in the Absa Premiership to eight matches this season, following their 1-1 draw at home to Golden Arrows on 17 October.
Gavin Hunt’s chargers had suffered a fourth defeat from their opening seven league matches after they were beaten 1-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic on 1 October.
The Clever Boys got off to a good start and nearly opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Amr Gamal unleashed a strike from outside the box, but the striker’s effort flew inches wide of the target.
Daine Klate should’ve handed his side the lead two minutes later, but the veteran winger guided his effort wide of the post.
However, Wits’ persistence paid off in the 43rd minute as Vincent Pule found the net with a simple tap-in to make it 1-0.
Wits continued where they left off in the first half.
Bakgaga started dominating proceedings after 75 minutes, but were unable to break down the Wits defence, despite Sipho Moeti threatening in the final third on numerous occasions.
Wits had an opportunity to double their lead three minutes on when substitute Granwald Scott produced an effort from distance, but the midfielder blazed his effort over the target.
Wits managed to hold on to their one-goal lead over Baroka until the final whistle to hand the home side their first defeat in the Absa Premiership this season.
