Yannick Zakri scored the only goal of the game as Ajax Cape Town beat Bidvest Wits 1-0 in their Absa Premiership encounter on Wednesday night, writes DEAN WORKMAN.
Ajax went into the game knowing that the three points were needed to help steer them out of the relegation zone. Wits, on the other hand, were looking to continue a good run of form with another victory.
Muhsin Ertugral’s team started the game well, which contributed to the frenetic pace of the opening 15 minutes.
After calling the Ajax goalkeeper into action a couple of times, Gavin Hunt’s men conceded the opening goal on 26 minutes. A pinpoint pass from Fagrie Lakay found Zakri, who made no mistake in finding the bottom corner from close range.
Maliele Pule looked to bring the away side level but after good work, his finishing let him down on a couple of occasions. Then just on the stroke of half-time, Daylon Claasen came close to finding a goal, but his shot hit the crossbar.
It was 1-0 to the home side at the break but the game was still in the balance.
The Urban Warriors almost doubled their lead with 63 minutes gone but Lakay’s shot was well saved by Daren Keet in the Wits goal.
Bidvest Wits threw everything forward in the last 15 minutes but could not break down a determined Ajax side, Ertugral’s team picking up a vital three points in their fight for survival.
