Baroka coach Wedson Nyirenda admits that he is still adapting to ‘PSL football’, despite guiding the Limpopo outfit to the Telkom Knockout trophy.

Bakgaga secured their first ever major cup in the top flight after stunning Orlando Pirates by claiming a 3-2 win on penalties at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Nyirenda says he is humbled to have won his first cup with the club five months since his appointment as head coach, while stating that it also lifts a burden off his shoulders after the passing of his mother this year.

‘First and foremost I’d like thank God the Almighty for his faithfulness and for his grace. When you believe in him and follow his commands he will do far [more than] what people expect,’ Nyirenda told SuperSport TV after the game.

‘The first Cup for Baroka and the entire Limpopo. It gives me pleasure to give those people the first trophy.

‘It is only five months for me in the PSL. I’m still learning PSL football and already we have bagged one cup. It is so pleasing. I want to thank my wife who has been supportive.

‘This lifts a lot of burden that I had throughout this year, including losing my mom.’

The Zambian coach admits that he did his homework on Pirates and knew what to expect from the Soweto giants, declaring that Bakgaga had tactically planned for the threats they possessed.

‘We knew what to expect from Pirates, they are a good ball-distributing team, ball-holding team and they can run. They did all they could, but tactically we had planned to close their switch play and channels on the wings. There’s a deep ball they pass over the top and play it back and they can shoot. But we closed that. We also closed [Vincent] Pule today, he couldn’t manoeuvre so much. That is where our victory came,’ he concluded.
