MATCH FACTS
This will be the first-ever meeting between the sides in the Telkom Knockout, with their only other cup clash coming when Maritzburg United were still known as Tembisa Classic in the 2006 FA Cup. Classic won 1-0.
Maritzburg have only ever reached the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout once, in 2012, when they lost 3-0 Orlando Pirates. They secured a 2-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-finals that year. They also made the quarter-finals in 2012 and 2015, but lost to SuperSport United and Pirates respectively.
Wits have played in nine Telkom Knockout quarter-finals in the PSL era, winning five and losing four. Last year they beat Baroka 1-0 at this stage on their way to lifting the trophy.
Maritzburg have only scored in two of their last 11 Telkom Knockout fixtures, that being in a 2-1 win over Jomo Cosmos in 2015 and a 2-1 win over Highlands Park in the first round this year.
Maritzburg have played 16 matches in the Telkom Knockout competition in the past, recording four wins, three draws and nine defeats. They have been outscored by their opponents 11-20.
These two sides have already met in the league this season, with the teams playing to a 0-0 draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on 15 September. That is part of a run that has seen Maritzburg fail to score in seven of their 10 matches so far this season in all competitions.
In fact, only four players have got on the scoresheet for the Team of Choice – Keletso Makgalwa, Bandile Shandu, Siphelele Ndlovu and Mohau Mokate – in 16 hours of football this season.
There have been 24 previous meetings between these sides in all competitions, with Wits victorious in 11 of those to go with four wins for Maritzburg (one as Tembisa Classic) and nine draws. Wits lead the scoring stakes 31-18.
In matches played at Maritzburg, Wits still lead the head-to-head with four wins to one and seven draws. Wits have outscored their opponents 14-10.
Maritzburg’s only home win over Wits came all the way back in 2009 when they claimed a 2-1 league success.
Two of the last three games, both at Maritzburg, have ended in 0-0 draws.
