Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League after suffering a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of the competition.
The two teams had drawn 2-2 in London for the first leg, but Joshua Kimmich’s strong header from Raphael Guerreiro’s cross in the 63rd minute was enough to send the Germans through to the semi-finals 3-2 on aggregate.
Even though the match was played at Emirates Stadium, Arsenal was optimistic about moving forward against a Bayern Munich team that had a difficult domestic season and was missing important players Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry due to injuries.
After Jamal Musiala forced David Raya into a full-stretch save at the other end, Gabriel Martinelli had Arsenal’s greatest chance of the first half in a tight and cagey second leg, but he blasted straight at Manuel Neuer.
Harry Kane only got nine touches in the first forty-five minutes, but Martin Odegaard’s deflected shot had Neuer scurrying over his line and forcing him into another save.
Given the significant stakes for both clubs, it is probably not surprising that there were few opportunities, but the second half saw more action, with Leon Goretzka smashing his header against the post and Guerreiro’s subsequent effort being deflected by Raya via the post.
However, Kimmich’s offensive header proved to be the game-winning goal, ensuring that Arsenal will continue to wait a long time to win the Champions League.
