Borussia Dortmund advanced to the Champions League final for the first time in 11 years following their 2-0 over Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
After the first half of the semi-final, Dortmund led 1-0. Mats Hummels extended Dortmund’s lead five yards out after receiving a left-wing corner from Julian Brandt.
That goal came shortly after PSG’s Warren Zaire-Emery missed a golden opportunity to score early in the second half when he volleyed a close-range shot against the post.
After falling behind 2-0 on aggregate, PSG had a pair of near-misses in the first encounter in Germany, with Nuno Mendes hitting the post twice.
The Italian referee, Daniele Orsato, initially gave the hosts a lifeline—a penalty—when he pointed to the spot, but he quickly reversed his decision, ruling that Hummels’ foul on Ousmane Dembele had been just outside the area.
Dortmund put up a stellar defensive performance to thwart PSG, meaning the French champions have never won a European championship. PSG lost in the final in 2020.
In PSG’s final European match before Real Madrid’s summer transfer, Kylian Mbappe had an effort deflected onto the crossbar, and Vitinha also fired against the bar; in total, his team had six shots on goal in the match.
Just like in May 2013, when Bayern Munich defeated Dortmund 2-1 in London, the final might be an all-German affair and take place at Wembley on Saturday, 1 June (200:00 BST).
The 2024 semi-final match between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will be played in Spain on Wednesday at 20:00 BST. The first leg was place in Germany and finished in a draw.
After beating Juventus 3-1 in the 1997 final, Dortmund is looking to win the European Championship for the second time in club history.
