Endrick became Real Madrid’s youngest Champions League goalscorer as Los Blancos secured a 3-1 victory over Stuttgart at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.

After Deniz Undav equalised Mbappe’s opening seconds into the second half, Antonio Rudiger scored in the 83rd minute for the record 15-time champions.

A low drive by Endrick, another Champions League debutant, sealed Madrid’s triumph in stoppage time.

Stuttgart had the best of an interesting first half, but Carlo Ancelotti’s team usually wins when it’s close, and they snatched the win.

“We suffered at the start because we lost a lot of duels… the important thing was to win and we won, so everything’s good,” said Madrid coach Ancelotti.

“You always have to fight at the start of the season, when you aren’t at your best.”

Mbappe opened the scoring in the second half after racing into space. He now has five goals in seven games in all competitions.

“I know I can do more, each game I feel better and now I’m scoring goals, and I’m happy here,” Mbappe told Movistar.

“(The game was) hard, but it’s the Champions League — it’s always difficult, but we won at home, we won the first game,” he continued.

“What we know is that the Champions League has changed and it’s important to win quickly to see if we can qualify quickly or not.”

With Eder Militao out, Ancelotti started Dani Carvajal in central defence and Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield after returning from injury.

After Toni Kroos retired in the summer, Madrid lacked balance and the game lurched beneath the Santiago Bernabeu lights.

Stuttgart had more possession and more serious chances in the first half, with Enzo Millot involved.

French midfielder pulled an early shot wide and forced Thibaut Courtois to tip over his threatening long-range strike, the best of several saves.

Mbappe struck twice but Alexander Nubel stopped them as he chased his first Champions League goal for Madrid.

Madrid were given a penalty after Maximilian Mittelstadt appeared to catch Rudiger with a clumsy swipe, but the referee overturned it as VAR showed no contact. Rodrygo had a shot just deflected over.

Stuttgart fell apart at the opening of the second half when Courtois saved Angelo Stiller and Undav struck the crossbar.

Rodrygo set up Mbappe for a goal 21 seconds after halftime. Many missed it on their way back to their seats from the Bernabeu bars.

The former PSG attacker wants to win the club game’s highest prize, matching Madrid’s devotion.

Stuttgart missed the warning and levelled when Vinicius hit the crossbar.

Jamie Leweling had many chances before swinging a corner back into the danger area for Undav to head beyond Courtois.

Ancelotti substituted 18-year-old Brazil attacker Endrick for the final 10 minutes to start the holders’ trophy defence with a victory.

Madrid’s centre-back Rudiger headed home Luka Modric’s corner in the 83rd minute.

Vinicius squandered a golden chance to secure Madrid’s win, but Endrick scored from the edge of the box at the death.

Instead of passing to his more experienced teammates, the forward shot early, beating Nubel.

“He’s a kid with a lot of quality and he showed it,” added Courtois.

“Obviously he showed personality by not passing to Vini or Kylian and shooting there himself.”
